The Casterton special

We had dinner down at the pub tonight, beautiful food as always. Michael had a mock battle with Mrs Potts, the barmaid, about the Richmond Tigers, the match being televised in the public bar. Mrs Potts is a fervent Richmond supporter, Michael is a Carlton supporter (when he can be bothered).

Mim disappeared behind the bar and then resurfaced at the table. "I ordered 5 nuggets and 5 chips and tomato sauce and gravy. Julie is going to cook them now!" Not long after this, the exact order was placed in front of her, well before our meals were served. After eating these and laughing at how she was the winner because she'd finished first, she then asked Paul for some icecream and strawberry sauce. This was promptly brought over - I swear this child has Priority One status!!!!!! After consuming all of this, she again disappeared behind the bar. I went to chase her out, but was too late. She'd ordered a hot chocolate with marshmallows from Mrs Potts!

After the meal was over, Mrs Potts grinned slyly at Michael and asked if he'd liked his Casterton Special (porterhouse, flavoured with caustic soda).

For those of you who haven't heard the recent news, four residents of the nursing home at Casterton were admitted to hospital after eating pancakes accidently laced with caustic soda. No serious injuries, luckily. Turns out that a kitchen staff member had used caustic soda to get burns off a pan and then placed it on a stove. Another staff member had assumed that it was clean and used it for pancakes. Oooopppppsssiiies. I guess Shrove Tuesday will be Soda Tuesday from now on.

Oh, and it also turns out that certain State government employees, those that have pretty lights on their cars, refer to our home town as "Sandwich City" ... because there are a lot of residents who are in bread. (read it alound).

Who's your Favourite?

Mim came running up to me in the bathroom tonight. "I'm your favourite!"
"My favourite what?"
"Your favourite girl! Caitlin is a reject, so I'm your favourite!"
"Did your father put you up to this?"
"No, I'm your favourite!"

Both Michael and Caitlin claim they didn't put the words in her mouth. Michael wants to play with her head by telling her that although we love them both equally, we've loved Caitlin longer. I don't think that's a good idea. She might become destructive.... oh, that's right - she already is!!!

The Standoff - Gomez vs Caramel

Beautiful Ethel, got a flower stuck in front of her ear.

Some conversations should be nipped in the bud!

Mim: When am I going to die?
Me: Oh, not for a very very very long time yet.
Mim: Why?
Me: Because you have to be very very old before you die.
Mim: As old as Mumma?
Me: (oh, shit, what have I gotten myself into) No, much older than Mumma!
Mim: I don't want to die.
Me: I don't want you to die either, darling.
Mim: Dying is so boring!
Me: Uhhh, yep...... Oh look let's see what's on TV, shall we!

Cough Cough, Splutter, Splutter

Mim has been coughing a bit every morning, as well as having a runny nose. The ladies at daycare said that was common over winter months, that many of the kids down there had runny noses constantly, so we didn't think too much of it.

Thursday morning, the poor dear woke up with gunky eyes. We thought it was conjunctivitis so I arranged for her to see the lovely doctor at my work. After all, what's driving an hour each way when you know the doctor is a good one!

Michael rang before we left, he'd left his wallet at home and could I drop it in on the way past. No problem. Raced it inside the school for him and ran down the stairs. Well, ran down about three steps before my ankle gave out and I fell down the remainder. Luckily I hadn't broken anything, although I had to sit there for a few minutes before I could get up and hobble to the car. Both ankles were killing me, thank goodness the car is an automatic.

The doctor gave us good news, it wasn't conjunctivitis, it was just a viral thing related to her cold. She's got antibiotics and a decongestant to take. I think I've been given a dud though. The decongestant has a warning "causes drowsiness". Do you think I can get Mim to take a sleep though!!!!!!!!!

On the way home, Mim wanted to call in and see Wazza and Jenny. I refused, "you don't want to make them sick as well do you?" Big mistake. From the back I could hear sobs, so looked around. She had tears pouring down her face, snot dribbling from her nose and was saying "I was just joking you mummy, I'm not sick, I was just (cough, cough, cough) joking!!! I wanna visit Wazza and Jennnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyy". Naturally enough, I wasn't convinced that she was just joking!

So whilst Mim coughs and splutters and blows her runny nose in front of the TV, I hobble around the house looking after her.

Hans Christian Who?

Mim: Can I watch this DBD please?
Me: Sure.
Mim: What is it?
Me: It's some stories by Hans Christian Anderson.
Mim: Who's Hans Cwistian Accident?

Well done Caitlin!

Caitlin was one of a handful of students chosen for the school's Yr 7 team competing in the Da Vinci Decathlon.

The Da Vinci Decathlon is a one day interschool tournament of minds for students in Code Breaking, Maths, Arts, Creative Production, Engineering, Poetry, English, Games of Strategy, General Knowledge.

On Wednesday morning, Michael had to have Caitlin at school by 6am to catch the bus to Ballarat Grammar. She arrived back at school at 5.30pm, totally exhausted, stuffed full of McDonalds, and bursting with pride.

Out of approximately 12 schools competing, her team came second!!!

Well done, Caitlin!

What's happened this week?

Well, not a lot really. We are all winding down towards end of term and the long long drive to Brisbane.

It was great having Monday as a public holiday, the family was roped in to help replant some trees at the local pool. It was a very rainy day but didn't take long for the few fellas and their chainsaws to dispose of the paperbark trees. There was a convoy of utes and trailers to take away the branches and someone had a cool digging machine. We transplanted a few of the trees, to make room for the bbq. The kids helped out with watering the new plants. Afterwards, we all retired to the pub for a sausage sizzle, and the kids spent a few hours playing Barry (a computer game). I left them all there and went home for an hour to get rid of a head ache. When I returned, I heard the Mim had been a bit teary "I miss my mummy....... but a toke (Coke) will make me feel better!" (little scam artist!!)

the Ute convoy

Hard work is fascinating for kids.

Thursday, hmmmm, did numerous loads of washing, all of which had to go through the dryer. The day was a mixture of sunshine and showers, but got a beautiful shot of the full rainbow that went over the house.

Also got a shot of the lovely Grampians from Penshurst

The lambs have been officially weaned. No more giving them bottles morning or night. We managed to drive Cecily into the western paddock last weekend, so she has been bonding with her new "flock". They are now spending more time outside the immediate house yard, so we'll be letting them into the top paddock soon (would like them to eat all the clover around the house first). Poor Cecily, she'd follow them to hell and back - she is just soooo happy to have company.

Today, we went for a drive to Mt Gambier to do some shopping. Came home via the 'scenic route', which means we detoured from Casterton to Baghallah to Sandford and then through the back roads and Teletubby hills to home. Saw lots of lambs gambolling around. Apparently there has been a bumper crop of twins and triplets this year.

I have been very DG this week, making a creamy potato, cauliflower and bacon soup on Monday night, Moroccan carrot and sweet potato soup tonight, Arni Lemonta last night (and Michael asked for crepes and honey ice-cream for dessert, made from scratch). And a number of loaves of bread - the sour dough loaf makes great croutons!!

Mim has been entertaining us, as usual, with her Mimmerisms. She really enjoyed watching a movie at daycare that was obviously based on the fable of the grasshopper and the ants. "Mummy, I love the prickets (crickets) and the ants!!"

I can't for the life of me remember the other ones that she has come out with. I know, though, that barely a day goes by when I don't think "I'll have to blog that one!".

Some photos from the last few weeks

I've been too lazy/busy to blog over the last few weeks. Nothing much has happened, though Mim still spouts forth so many amusing things to blog. Like the other day when something didn't go right for her, we hear an "Oh, cwap!" from her bedroom.

We received a parcel from Aunty Carla two weeks ago. It contained Mim's birthday present, a new pair of jeans and a lovely pink parka. Mim squealed in delight (unfortunately I had just bent down beside her, so my ears were still ringing hours later). Mim first put it on the following morning, when she went outside in her PJs to look for Phoebe's egg.

I think she looks adorable in it, so thank you very much Carla.

This is a photo taken about 7.30am, on a lovely cold and misty morning. It's still bizarre to be going outside at 6.30am (to feed the lambs) and seeing the moon and stars still out.

We also get lovely sunsets here, I can understand why artists flock to Victoria.

On our last shopping trip, we allowed Mim to get a $6 blonde wig from the Reject Shop. The girls love swapping wigs.

(bonafide rock chicks, after some prompting by Michael)

Mim and I have spent some time wandering around the back paddocks, collecting bark and sticks for kindling. I love the fact that I can let Mim just wander around on her own and not have to keep an eye on her. She spent over an hour the other day chasing Cecily, or watching as Gomez chased Cecily.

And speaking of small canines, here's a lovely candid shot of the tables about to be turned on him. He loves chasing Phoebe, and she often chases him back. I heard a yelp about one second after taking this picture.
